Geordan Olson and her students in the LCI Arts Academy Dance program are ready to Lean In to some high-energy arts entertainment at the Yates Centre later this month.
Lean In will run Jan. 29-30 with performances at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. daily. Tickets are available at Ticket Centre location in the Yates or by calling 403-329-7328.
The shows will feature the artistry of all 101 dance academy students involved in the audition-only program which is open to all Grade 9 to 12 students in Lethbridge schools. Students work with renowned choreographers from around Canada and the U.S., said Olson in an interview  LCI. Those choreographers are flown in from destinations such as Florida, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
“It’s an artist-in-residency program so we’re constantly bringing in artists in residence,” said Olson.
“We bring in the best of the best from across North America to train the kids,” Olson added.
The theme of the upcoming production is rock ‘n roll, funk and hip hop with the Lean In title referring to leaning into personal identity and being confident in who we as humans are.
“It’s kind of like rock ‘n roll, it’s about confidence, leaning in. It’s a good theme for teenagers…lean into who you are, lean into your identity, don’t let outside noise affect you,” added Olson.
“The show’s basically like one big party, it’s short and punchy and it’s just like a party vibe the whole time,” said Olson.”
A live DJ from Calgary named Catfishthewizard is being brought in to open the show.
“We’re really creating a party atmosphere,” said the instructor.
By expressing themselves through art, by having the courage to perform and push boundaries, people can find out who they are as human beings, Olson believes.
“That’s the mandate of our dance program, to push boundaries and to challenge your audience, too.”
