Two men are charged with weapons offences and sneaking firearms back and forth into Canada after they were detained in a remote area south of Val Marie, Sask. on Jan. 6.

U.S. border patrol states a truck with two men in it was stopped at about 9 p.m. that night and the RCMP’s Integrated Border Enforcement Team alerted, which along with Pontiex RCMP officers, discovered a box with a pistol in it on the Canadian side near the crossing point.

Saskatchewan Mounties also said a search of an apartment tied to the men turned up explosive chemicals and four other long guns that are prohibited in Canada, along with ammunition.

The men, Nathaniel Rose, 19, of Calgary, and Arya Payendefar, 19, of Saskatoon, do not face charges in the United States, but were returned to authorities here on Jan. 7.

They each face single counts of possessing a gun without a licence, possessing prohibited weapons without a licence, illegally importing firearms into Canada and smuggling a restricted firearm.

Both are set to appear in Swift Current provincial court Feb. 12.
