The Medicine Hat Police Service made a trio of arrests over the weekend. Police say they responded to a residence on Anson Avenue SW to assist the owner of a short-term rental with the removal of an overdue renter. Upon arrival, officers located and arrested three individuals inside the residence – Chase Hehr, Brooklyn Carriere and Nathan Canfield, the latter of whom was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large from federal corrections. During their investigation, officers discovered two loaded firearms, ammunition, cocaine and evidence of drug trafficking within the residence. The 39-year-old Canfield was charged with: – Nine counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order; – Two counts of unsafe storage of a firearm; – Two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm; – Two counts possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized; – Possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number; – Possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance and Possession of proceeds of crime. The 42-year-old Hehr was levelled 16 charges: – Five counts of failure to comply with a release order; – Four counts of failure to comply with a release order; – Three counts of failure to comply with a release order; – Two counts of unsafe storage of a firearm; – Possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number; – Possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance. The 30-year-old Carriere had 10 charges: – Four counts of Possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized; – Two counts of failure to comply with a probation order; – Two counts of unsafe storage of a firearm; – Possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, – Possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance. All three individuals were held for Judicial Interim Release hearings. Canfield was remanded into custody until Jan. 7. Hehr was remanded into custody until Dec. 27 and Carriere was released and is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on Jan. More than 1,300 vehicles were inspected in weekend check stops The MHPS conducted check stops on Friday and Saturday, inspecting 1,309 vehicles at various locations across the city. As a result, six immediate roadside sanctions were issued, including one for drug-impaired driving. In addition, officers issued 11 traffic safety act tickets and 17 traffic safety act warnings. 28
