Freezing rain and icy road conditions on Sunday left 25 vehicles and eight semi-trucks in the ditch along the Trans-Canada Highway near Brooks, Mounties in that city report, while the No. 1 highway was also closed for a time near Swift Current.

There were no serious injuries reported between Bassano and Brooks, though the highway was closed at times as towing crews removed vehicles.

Warming temperatures on Saturday, then a return to freezing conditions, led to “extreme black ice” conditions.

The travellers forecast for Christmas week shows generally calm conditions remaining near freezing with a mix of sun and cloud, but no new precipitation in the southeast corner of Alberta.

Fugitive caught

Brooks RCMP says a Kelowna man wanted on charges of possessing child pornography and luring a child has been found in the Alberta city and arrested.

Authorities say Mounties arrested Patrick Waldrum in the afternoon on Dec. 19 at a hotel in Brooks. He was in custody as transportation to British Columbia was being arranged.
