U18 SAHA women’s team finishes second at Mandi Schwartz tournament

The South Alberta Hockey Academy’s U18 women’s team finished second at the Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament.

The Dunmore-based academy went 4-1 at the prestigious tournament held at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask., hosted in the honour of Mandi Schwartz who passed from acute myeloid leukemia in 2011.

Schwartz won bronze at the 2003 Canada Games with Saskatchewan and played two and a third seasons with the Yale Bulldogs before being diagnosed with leukemia.

SAHA opened the tournament with a 3-2 win Friday over the Saskatoon Stars U18AAA.

Julie Barlow, Marley Howes and Sara Stefanic scored for SAHA, Hannah Palumbo made 23 saves.

Emily Gerdevich led SAHA to a 4-1 win later over the Red Deer Cheifs U18AAA, scoring two goals with an assist. Kamryn Reiber had a pair of goals, Barlow had three helpers. Emma Skolney made 19 saves.

They beat the Westman Wildcats U18AAA 5-1 on Saturday.

Tyler Crocker scored three times, adding an assist. Both Gerdevich and Reiber had a goal, Phoenix Buckler made 30 saves.

SAHA shut-out the Lloydminster Steelers U18AAA later Saturday, with Skolney making 28 saves in the win.

Makayla Peters and Crocker each had a goal and an assist, while Myla Motz scored a solo tally.

They finished the weekend with a 6-3 loss in the finals Sunday, falling to the Shawnigan Lake School.

Motz scored twice for SAHA in the loss, Jaylee Skog scored a solo marker. Palumbo made 23 saves.

SAHA’s U18 women’s team (13-6-2) is on the road Thursday, facing Edge academy.

U18 men’s

SAHA’s U18 men’s team saw their point streak come to an end over the weekend.

They had a stretch of recording a point in 12 straight games, ending with a 4-1 loss Saturday to Pacific Coast Hockey Academy.

SAHA opened the weekend with a 5-4 shootout loss to Okanagan Hockey Academy on Thursday.

Ty Hynes and Owen Brees each had a goal and an assist, both Ty Wasyluk and Kingston Chisholm scored as well. Brayden Ryan-Mackay had two assists. Mattias Radke made 36 saves.

They beat Rink Kelowna 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday. Luke Warrener and Josiah Jackson scored in the game, Radke made 37 saves. Avery Watson had the game winner in the sixth round of the shootout.

Jackson scored SAHA’s lone goal in the streak-busting loss Saturday, Radke made 29 stops.

SAHA’s U18 men’s team (11-7-3) is off until January.

U17

SAHA’s U17 men’s team had a pair of wins in a pair of home games at the Big Marble Go Centre.

They beat Calgary International Hockey Academy 5-3 on Friday and topped Notre Dame 6-4 on Saturday.

Kutcher Aquila had two goals and two assists in the win Friday, Karter Kurpjuweit added two goals with an assist. Kade Jensen scored a solo marker and Hunter Zawislak made 23 saves.

In Saturday’s win, Aquila had a hat trick with an assist for a four-point effort. Aidan Poulin and Ryker Klassen had a goal each, Brennan Finke had two assists. Zawislak made 24 saves.

SAHA’s U17 men’s team (8-9-1) hosts Calgary International for a pair of games this weekend at Big Marble, 7:45 p.m. on Friday and 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
