Throughout the month Medicine Hat police plan to increase officer presence on roadways as the service announced it will ramp up check stops to promote safe roads over the Holiday Season.
On Tuesday police said they would be increasing the number of announced and un-announced check stops and say they could occur anytime during the day or night over the next few weeks.
“Some check stops will be advertised, such as the ones that will be held on Dec. 13 and Dec. 21, other days will not be announced,” states a press release.
Drivers will be required to provide a breath sample forthwith when entering a check stop. The roadside screening device provides immediate readings to traffic officers, and drivers who pass the test will continue on their way.
“The goal is to provide minimal disruption to motorists while ensuring the safety of our roads,” states the press release.
Last year police charged 330 drivers under the Immediate Roadside Sanction program. So far this year police have charged more than 200 motorists under the program.
“Every death and injury caused by impaired driving is completely preventable, we all have a responsibility when it comes to preventing impaired driving whether by alcohol or drugs.”
In 2018 the province introduced new impaired driving legislation that includes mandatory alcohol screening during traffic stops.
Police are asking the public to contact 911 if you suspect someone of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
