With the Holiday Season in full swing, the Medicine Hat Public Library invites residents to get a head start on their gift wrapping.

This event, known as the “Wrap and Yap,” asks for people to bring their gifts and all their wrapping supplies down to the Legion Room on Saturday at 2 p.m, to be able to keep some excellent company while they tackle this festive chore.

“It’s just to give people a place that they can wrap their holiday gifts for people,” said Chris Brown, head of marketing and community engagement with MHPL. “Come along with friends, or just come on your own and meet other people, help get into the holiday spirit.”

The opportunity is ideal for those who might need a little social motivation to tackle their wrapping, or who need to escape nosey friends, children and housemates who may take the opportunity to sneak a peek at what will be waiting for them under the tree.

After observing success with similar offerings at other libraries, MHPL is trying a Wrap and Yap for the first time, though a second one will be offered for those who prefer to do their holiday shopping closer to the end of December or need an evening time slot on Dec. 19 at 6 p.m.

Attendees can expect Christmas tunes or the fireplace channel to help set the atmosphere, as well as warm drinks and festive snacks to keep their spirits bright while they socialize and maybe even gain some wrapping inspiration from each other.

“For some people, it’s a tougher time of year with social isolation, so this is kind of a reason to get out and meet some people and try to combat that a little bit,” said Brown. “It gives people somewhere to be, and something to do as they get ready for the holidays.”
