Rattlers Roundup: Winter sports wraps for holiday break

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers winter sports teams finished up their last weekend before the break.

All five of the Rattlers’ winter sports teams were in action over the weekend, the last before students get wrapped up in exams and the Holiday Season.

MHC’s women’s hockey team had a pair of home games, hosting the Lakeland College Rustlers for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. They lost 11-1 to Lakeland College on Friday and 6-1 on Saturday.

Claira Bensley scored the Rattlers’ lone goal Friday, Jessika Charron made 37 saves. In Saturday’s loss, Sienna Vieira scored for MHC and Anna Stewart made 41 saves.

The hockey team (1-11) is off until Jan. 10.

Basketball

MHC’s basketball teams played host to Lakeland College and the Keyano College Huskies over the weekend.

The Rattlers women picked up a 2-0 forfeit win Friday, with Lakeland not travelling to Medicine Hat. They lost 65-44 to Keyano College on Saturday.

Jaida Gold led the Rattlers on Saturday with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

MHC’s men’s team lost both home games, falling 86-70 to Lakeland College on Friday and 99-77 to Keyano College on Saturday.

Jordan Biggar had 15 points and seven assists in the loss Friday, Cooper Ward tallied 14 points with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Against Keyano College, Ward led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The women (4-5) and men (4-5) are now off until Jan. 10, when they face St. Mary’s University on the road.

Volleyball

MHC’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams were on the road, facing Lakeland College and Keyano College.

The men’s team dropped both contests, falling in three sets Friday (15-25, 22-25, 9-25) and three sets on Saturday (19-25, 23-25, 17-25).

Jordan McKee had seven kills in Friday’s loss, adding another nine on Saturday.

The women’s team also lost in three sets to Lakeland College (15-25, 11-25, 13-15) then went the distance before losing in five sets against Keyano College (11-25, 25-17, 15-25, 27-25, 12-15).

In Friday’s loss, Malea Kletzel had seven kills. Jaivyn Barabe led the way in Saturday’s match with 14 kills.

The men (4-5) and women (2-7) are off until Jan. 17 when they host the Ambrose University Lions.
