After a successful Spirit of Giving gala and Christmas tree auction, the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund buckles in for a busy intake session this year.

The Santa Claus Fund successfully auctioned off 13 trees, and is deeply grateful for the generosity of sponsors and community members, especially as they have a record first day helping families make Christmas special for their children.

“(Wednesday) was our busiest day ever. We served 94 families … with 125 children, and we distributed $12,500 on our first day of intake and grocery gift cards for families to purchase a Christmas meal. And we still have 11 days to go,” said Deanna Doerksen, executive director.

The feeling is bittersweet, says Doerksen, as while they’re pleased to be able to help so many families, it’s unfortunate that so many have found themselves in need of support this year.

There are still several days to go on the intake, which remains open to drop-in applications for those who are struggling to cover the cost of making the season special for their children, something for which the Santa Claus Fund is glad to lend a helping hand.

Those looking to support are encouraged to keep an eye out for their upcoming fundraiser events. This Saturday and next, Suffield Fire will be present at the Walmart to collect toys, and this year also marks 38 years of the Santa Claus Fund Charity Auction at the Dayz Off Pub on Dec. 12.

“It’s a Medicine Hat annual tradition, so come out and show your support, and remember, it’s all for the kids,” said Doerksen. “We also have our Santa Claus is Coming to Town parade on Dec.13, where we’ll start at the Big Marble Go Centre, and we end at the Medicine Hat mall, where Santa will provide the first gift of Christmas.”

Those looking to make a direct donation are encouraged to offer cash, as it can be used for grocery vouchers, but in regards to gifts, the most needed items are gifts for girls from 7-12 and boys 10-12, as well as teen books and gifts for babies ages 0-2.
