CLAIRE JEAN SERGEANT
CLAIRE JEAN SERGEANT August 1st, 1936 November 7th, 2024
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Claire Jean Sergeant on November 7th, 2024, at the age of 88 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, David (Sandy) Sergeant; daughters, Pamela Sergeant and Angela Sergeant; grandchildren, Matthew, Darren, Amy (Chris), Kara (Milo), Dey (Geoff), Murrae (Dan), Desiree (Mike) and Levi (Steph); great grandchildren, Coleton (Ashlee), Kaidence, Brandt, Davis, Darian, Olivia, Jack, Layla, Ava, Malcolm, Frankie and Ella; great great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Hudson and Parker; sisters, Evelina, Rosemarie and Margueritte. Claire was predeceased by her husband, Jim Sergeant (2015); parents, William and Mary Barker; daughter, Laura Collier (February 2020); son, Brad (April 2019); grandchildren, Chris Collier (August 2013) and Jennifer Collier (June 1983); son-in-law, Ross Collier (July 2024).
Claire was born on August 1st, 1936, in Russell, Manitoba and raised on the nearby family farm in Binscarth. She had scarlet fever, which kept her home at the end of her final year of high school; but she graduated on her merit. Afterwards, Claire taught on the Koostatak reserve and waitressed in Virden along with her sister, Evelina. It was at the restaurant that she met Jim and Evelina met Fred; they had a double wedding on April 21st, 1956. Claire and Jim lived in a trailer at the rig sites that Jim worked at, until she was expecting their 3rd child, and then they settled in Medicine Hat. After their 5th child was in school, Claire went to the University of Lethbridge where she achieved a Bachelor of Education with an Early Childhood major. She started teaching Grade 2 at Riverside School, then Webster Niblock, and ended her 15-year career at George Davison School when she retired in 1992. She was part of the Southern Alberta Early Childhood Education Council throughout her career. Following retirement, she became involved with the Alberta Retired Teacher’s Association. She was awarded a Lifetime Membership in the Association. Claire was committed to her family and her community. She volunteered through the church with breakfast at Elm Street School, and other venues. She also volunteered at the college, teaching English to exchange students. She and Jim were also long-time members of the Historical Society of Medicine Hat and District. All who knew Claire will miss her sense of humour, wit and generosity.
Her celebration of life will be held at First Assembly of God, 395 9 St SE on November 30th at 11:00am. Live Stream will be available at

Mary passed away peacefully after a short battle with lung cancer. She was pre-deceased by her son, Rob; daughter, Karen; and husband, Bob; all whom she knew she would be seeing soon and that faith helped her through the past few months. She will be forever so fondly remembered by her family, daughter, Roxanne (Kelly); son in law, Dennis; grandchildren, Mitchell (Tanis), Michael (Sharmaine), Stephanie, Michelle (Travis) and Nicole (Josh); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Easton, Sophia, Kinsley and Hayden and Baby S (due in June). Mary was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario and moved to Medicine Hat with her family in 1974.
She was lucky and thankful to have the love of not only her family but many friends who helped her on her journey these past years. A special thank you to Medicine Hat palliative home care team and each and every staff member at St Joseph’s for the wonderful care and compassion provided to her.
