Wednesday was election day in Saskatchewan municipalities for urban voters and odd-numbered rural wards.

A number of positions in southwest Saskatchewan were acclaimed on nomination day when only one name was received, but elections for mayor and council were set to go ahead in several towns and cities.

In Swift Current, Al Bridal was acclaimed to a second consecutive term as mayor, but 10 candidates vied for seats on the city’s council in voting that ended late Wednesday.

A council vote was also scheduled in Maple Creek, where six seats would be awarded among seven candidates.

Mayor Michelle McKenzie was acclaimed to another term.

In Shaunavon, two candidates for mayor were Drew Grainger and Cal Vance, while 18 candidates ran for just three council positions in the town of 1,700.

In Richmound, incumbent mayoral candidate Brad Miller faced challenger Jody Smith, and there were candidates Kathy Bullock, Lorne Lowry and Wade Welte for two village council seats.

In Gull Lake, Dennis Kirk and Nasser Zanidean ran for mayor while seven candidates sought one of six council seats.

In Leader, incumbent mayor Aaron Wenzel was acclaimed, but seven candidates were registered to contest for six council seats.

There was no election in Fox Valley as Mayor Sean Checkley and four council candidates were acclaimed on Oct. 9.

Unofficial results from advanced and general voting will be published in the News when available.
