JOYCE MCQUEEN

JOYCE MCQUEEN June 22, 1926 – October 26, 2024
Joyce passed away peacefully at the age of 98 at the Brentwood Care home in Calgary AB.
She was loved and appreciated by all she came in contact with during her long life including friends and people who cared for her at Brentwood.
Joyce was born in Medicine Hat. She lived in Calgary the last 12 years but always called Medicine Hat home and longed to return. She is predeceased by her husband Gordon in 2016 and 2 sisters Velva Moser and Chrissie Rose.
Joyce was active in St. John’s Presbyterian Church. She was a part of the Women’s Guild. She enjoyed the camaraderie and made lifelong friends with a group of ladies. They called themselves the Merry Milers and you could find them out walking every Thursday morning and enjoying their time together as friends do. In her later years we would read her the weekly sermons which she really appreciated
She also enjoyed her time with the Calorie Counters group attending weekly meetings and attending conferences throughout Alberta.
Bowling and curling were also favorite past times.
Joyce worked in retail on and off throughout her life. First as a young woman in Eaton’s, then while raising her family and finally at the Bay where she retired.
There were many fond memories of camping trips to Elkwater (most summer weekends) and camping vacations throughout Alberta, BC, Montana, Washington and Wyoming.
Mom always said her greatest accomplishment was raising her 5 children Patricia (Jorge), Ian (Janis), Devora (Mick) and twins Karen (predeceased Victor) and Kay (Rory). This family has grown to 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She will be missed by all of us. Love you Mom!

RAYMOND KLUS

RAYMOND KLUS 1933 ~ 2024 It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, Raymond George Klus of Medicine Hat who left us in the early morning of Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 91 years. Raymond was born in Melville, SK., on August 3, 1933, to parents John and Marie Klus. After his schooling, he started a career with the Canadian National Railway where he worked for 38 years. He married the love of his life, Christina on November 19, 1955, and they had two daughters, Priscilla and Shannondoe. Dad and mom loved to head south each winter and travelled to Hawaii for 35 consecutive years. They retired in Kelowna, BC, eventually moved back to Saskatchewan and lastly to Medicine Hat. Raymond was predeceased by his parents, John and Marie; 16 siblings and his son-in-law, Don. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Christina; his daughters, Priscilla and Shannondoe; five grandchildren, James (Jen) West, Christopher West, Colette Best, Krissy (Scott) Best and Courtney (Daryl) Best; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. BETTY ANN BERT 1951 ~ 2024 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Betty Ann Bert announce her passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the age of 73 years. Her loving memory will forever be cherished by her husband, Roy; son, Royce (Leesa) Bert and their children, Deegan and Keyana; daughter, Candice (Steve) Schaufele and their children, Gavyn, Taye, Lynden and Kelyn; mother, Irma Springer; sisters, Dona, Leona and Linda as well as their families. She was predeceased by her father, Walter Springer. Betty Ann was born in Empress, Alberta on October 7, 1951. She married Fitzroy ‘Roy’ Bert on August 12, 1978. Throughout her life, she always put family first, especially when it came to supporting her children and grandchildren in all of their endevours. Betty Ann’s successes in business came with long hours and hard work, having owned and operated Broadway Beauty and Tanning Salon for over 50 years. Her strong Christian faith will now guide her through her next life’s journey. A Private Celebration of Betty Ann’s life will be held in the coming days. 1939 ~ DOUG PICKEN ~ 2024 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doug Picken, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Doug passed away on November 2, 2024, at the age of 85 years. Doug was a devoted husband to his late wife, Gloria Picken, with whom he shared a beautiful life for 63 years. Doug is survived by his children, Bruce Picken, Sandy (Mel) Brabrant, and Deb Picken; grandchildren, Mark Picken (Amber) and Christine Hilsendeger, as well as his cherished great-grandchildren, Cade, Lacey, and Rowan; as well as his brothers, Stanley and Herb, and his sister, Thelma. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Gloria; and his parents, Robert and Phoebe Picken. Doug was also a dedicated entrepreneur. He owned and operated Fred’s Auto Wreckers/The Hubcap Place for over 45 years. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in everything he did, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Doug had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, and skidooing. He loved stock car racing and reveled in the thrill of competition, winning several championships that showcased his skill and determination. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him, but his memory will forever remain in our hearts. Doug will be missed and remembered without a formal service. 1939 – ALICE FISCHER – 2024 It is with great sadness that we share the loss of our dear mother and grandmother. Alice passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 30th, 2024, in Calgary. Alice leaves to mourn her two sons; Stuart (Luisa) and Steven (Antoine); as well as her beloved grandsons, Benjamin and Matthew. She is also survived by her son’s father, Norman; her sister, Anne Durr; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Eva Fischer, as well as six brothers and three sisters. She was a proud woman and worked hard throughout her life, from the farm to the city. Her boys were her life, and she lived every day to make sure they had what they needed. She was incredibly proud of them and their families. She loved to cook, and no one ever went away hungry, even after a short visit. Holidays were always special sewing Halloween costumes, decorating the house for Christmas, preparing a special feast, and ensuring every birthday was celebrated appropriately. She also loved music whether singing around a campfire, playing her organ or records, and of course, singing with her brothers and sisters in the early years. She had a big heart, and many benefitted from her kindness. Rest in peace, Mom. Thank you for everything. We love you. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. LYLE BOWLES 1937 – 2024 Lyle Bowles of Medicine Hat, Alberta went to be with his Lord and Saviour on November 7, 2024, at the of 87 years. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores, his son Scott, his daughter Leann (Gordon), three grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother LeVern, two sisters Donna May Moore, BettyAnn Bespflug and a brother-in-law Harvey Wasilow.

ELAINE KOI 1936 – 2024 Elaine Audrey Koi of Bow Island, beloved wife of the late Dennis Koi, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at the age of 88 years, after a brief illness. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, Shelly (Kent) Bjerkseth and Bruce (Tammy, deceased) Koi; her grandchildren, Reed (Denise) Bjerkseth and their children Hudson and Violet; Eric Bjerkseth, Tessa Koi (special friend, Kevin), Cale Koi (special friend, Sydnie) and her sister, Marlene (Simon) Hammel. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Margaret Thorson and brother-in-law, John McMaster. Elaine was born in Medicine Hat and raised on the family farm of George and Margaret Thorson in the Bow Island area. Elaine and her husband Dennis of 64 years were life long members of the Bow Island Community. Throughout the years, Elaine enjoyed many hours of coffee time and visiting with relatives and friends. Elaine worked as the Secretary/Treasurer for St. Michael’s School for a number of years. She retired with Dennis and they enjoyed golfing, camping, card playing and good times with friends. A special thank you to all the staff at Pleasant View Lodge in Bow Island. Elaine appreciated all the care and attention you gave her. No formal service will be held. Elaine will be remembered fondly by her family and friends.
