A moment of silence was observed in the Alberta legislature on Monday in honour of Alan Hyland, a long-serving MLA and local politician who died in June.

Speaker Nathan Cooper read a brief biography at the opening of the session between the customary prayer, land acknowledgement and the singing of O’Canada.

Hyland served as the MLA for Cypress riding and the Cypress-Redcliff riding from 1975 until 1993. He also served as the mayor of Bow Island for 12 years until 2010, then a town councillor until 2021.

He died on June 24 at the age of 78.

At the legislature

Another regional figure was noted at the legislature as the week began, as Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright recognized Highway 3 Twinning Association president Bill Chapman, a council member from Coaldale.
