@MedicineHatNews A man charged with driving through a chain link fence and over an embankment of the South Saskatchewan River while eluding police appeared in court Wednesday with large bruises and cuts on his face and head. Leonard Beaulieu, 32, appeared at Court of Justice in Medicine Hat to answer to eight charges, including uttering threats, having a firearm in his vehicle, other weapons charges, dangerous operation of a vehicle and flight from police. Speaking via closed-circuit TV feed from the Medicine Hat Remand Centre, Beaulieu requested an adjournment in order to contact a lawyer. The matter was put over to Nov. 5. Crown prosecutors say they will proceed with the matter by way of indictment on all counts, and will oppose his interim release while the matters are being dealt with. Medicine Hat police say officers were called to a dispute involving a weapon in Crestwood on Tuesday but found the male suspect had left. Police located his vehicle later in the day but called off a chase, citing public safety reasons. The News has confirmed that the accused is in fact the same Leonard Beaulieu who was given an eight-year prison sentence for the manslaughter shooting death of Jordan Pede on New Year’s Eve in 2016. 9
