@MedicineHatNews The Alberta RCMP are highlighting response times it is posting in rural areas, stating that “despite the large jurisdiction, frequently in remote, rural regions, the average response time of the Alberta RCMP is only 21 minutes 20 seconds.” A release from Alberta K Division on Monday says the force’s operational communications centre triages calls to handle the most serious first, prioritizing reports of an immediate threat to life and safety. Those move ahead of crimes that are discovered after the fact, or those that pose no immediate threat to public safety. Currently, 87 per cent of calls to the centre are answered in under one minute, and a further 10 per cent are answered under the two-minute mark. About half of all calls are responded to within 20 minutes, and the 15.4 per cent of calls considered “high priority” are responded to in approximately five minutes. The RCMP is responsible for policing most of Alberta’s rural communities and counties, comprising more than 660,000 square kilometres across the province, including the counties of Cypress, Newell and Forty Mile, along with the city of Brooks in the southeast. 8
