Memorial event honouring former Rattler raises money for mental health supports

By Medicine Hat News on October 8, 2024.

The second annual Lettuce Smash! Memorial Scrimmage and Social, held Sept. 14 in memory of Leslie Lynne McLennan, raised $3,560 for Medicine Hat Family Service. The event brings together the community along with Medicine Hat College Rattlers alumni to raise awareness for mental health

Proceeds go toward honouring McLennan’s legacy by supporting vital mental health support services. McLennan, known by family and friends as a bright and accomplished young woman, was a victim of suicide in 2022 after struggling with a mental health crisis. Despite reaching out for help, her family believes she was left without a safety plan or follow-up.

McLennan grew up in Medicine Hat, was captain of the Rattlers soccer team, then earned a full soccer scholarship to the University of Regina, graduating with a degree in kinesiology. She also obtained her Class 1 drivers licence and worked in the male dominated oil and gas industry.

McLennan’s death motivated her friends and family to advocate for greater mental health awareness and support through events like the Lettuce Smash.

The day featured a friendly co-ed soccer scrimmage at Medicine Hat College, where teams were formed on the day, followed by fans cheering on the Rattlers during their home opener. The evening continued with a fundraiser at Rustic Kitchen and Bar, with donations coming from the 50/50 draw, proceeds from the Rustic Kitchen and Bar fundraiser and personal contributions from family and friends.

The $3,560 raised will go to Medicine Hat Family Service to help fund mental health programs and services for individuals and families in the community. McLennan’s family expressed appreciation for the support shown.

“Our family is incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us for the Lettuce Smash Memorial event,” said Cherry McLennan. “This second year has brought us both strength and healing as we honour Leslie’s life by supporting mental health awareness.”

Medicine Hat Family Service director Celina Simmonds added, “This donation is a profound reminder of the importance of community support. We are humbled by the McLennan family’s commitment to raising awareness and by everyone who came together in Leslie’s memory to support mental health. These funds will go a long way in providing accessible mental health care to those in need.”
