JOHN THOMPSON

JOHN THOMPSON September 8, 1950 ~September 28, 2024
John Alexander Thompson, beloved husband of Allyne, passed away peacefully at the Community Care Centre in Medicine Hat on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the age of 74 years. John was born on September 8, 1950, in Carrickfergus, Ireland. He immigrated with his family to Canada, settling in Medicine Hat in 1972, where he worked a variety of jobs before settling into a long career with the public school division as a custodial worker. His commitment to his work spanned over 30 years, along with 19+ years with the local library, before his well earned retirement. John was a man of many passions, from golfing to particiapting in the dart league. He had a knack for finding a good bargain, often frequenting garage sales with his beloved grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. John also had the opportunity to travel back to his roots in Ireland on several occasions with his family, which were cherished moments of connection and joy. In 1989, John met the love of his life, Allyne, and the two were married in 1991. Together, they built a life full of laughter and love. John was the jokester of the family, never leaving home without a good joke to share, and his infectious sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. He loved helping others and was always willing to fix things, offering a hand to anyone in need. John was a family man, through and through, with a heart big enough to embrace all who crossed his path. His laughter, kindness, and good-natured spirit will forever be remembered by his friends, family, and community. John is survived by his loving wife, Allyne; children, Philip (Cindy) Thompson, Kimberley (Peter) Carter, Laurie (Jim) Rubin and Darren (Laura) Skovmose; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters along with numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his stepson, Kevin Skovmose; one brother and a sister. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. OLIVER OST

OLIVER OST February 6, 1942 ~ September 30, 2024

It is with a heavy heart that Carol announces the passing of her beloved husband, Oliver Melvin Ost. He passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the age of 82 years.
Long-time rancher, Oliver Ost, of Seven Persons always wanted to ranch. As a young man, he often worked two or three jobs to buy land, or cattle, or better bulls.
The eldest son of Olander and Lillian Ost, Oliver was loved by and married to his sweetheart, Carol Hjelmen of Val Marie, Saskatchewan on November 4, 1972. Oliver and Carol have two children, Karla and Michael.
Karla and her husband, David Long, along with their two sons, Walker (Layne Stevenson) and Houston, farm near Walsh, AB.
Michael and his wife, Kimberly, along with their five children, Shelby (Brayden), Jamieson (Jenna Ahrens), Kaleb (Hannah Weinrauch), Emma-Joe (Jeff) and great-granddaughter, Daisy-May, and Haylie; farm on the family’s homestead. Oliver also leaves behind his sister, Linda Richards of Lethbridge, and her daughter, Dr. Kimberly Richards of Vancouver. Oliver was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Ed and Robbie.
Oliver loved country life. He loved to see a buck deer bounding up a hill, or a see a new calf safely on the ground. He seldom took time to go to a stampede or a dance because he had a goal that required his work to reach some ranch-related agenda. The exception to that would be how proud he was to see his grandsons, Walker and Houston team rope together. It was important for him to see his grandchildren finish high school, and he encouraged them to train for their career interests.
Michael and his family took over Ost Cattle Company as Oliver’s diabetes limited his later life. Oliver and Carol moved to Medicine Hat and Carol was able to provide his medical care at their home until recently. Karla supported her parents’ health on a daily basis as friends and family phoned or paid them a visit.
A genuine thank you goes to the medical professionals from southern Alberta including the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, ambulance drivers who transported Oliver to hospital emergency, Home Care which aided him staying in their home for so long, and Haven East where he was welcomed in this final stage of his life… in what loving arms you held Oliver.
We will miss your strength and wisdom, Oliver Ost!
A Come & Go Celebration of Oliver’s life will be held in the Reflections Reception Facility, Milestone Room (north entrance), 937 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Monday, October 14, 2024, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) Honoured to serve the family is
