Police seize 11 firearms following noncompliant roadside arrest

Kaden Schenkey has been charged with several firearms and drug related charges after police deployed pepper ball munitions after failure to comply with officers during a vehicle stop last Thursday.

Tactical team members were able to safely take Schenkey into custody around 2:20 p.m. Following his arrest officers conducted search warrants at both his South Ridge home and a storage unit located in the Cottonwood area, discovering several firearms, drugs and trafficking paraphernalia.

In total police seized 11 firearms, many with ammunition in close proximity as well as a firearm suppressor and body armour. Police also seized 147 grams of cocaine, 34 grams of methamphetamine, 1.48 grams of fentanyl and 16.24 fluid ounces of gamma hydroxybutyrate.

As well, police seized multiple cell phones, scales, packaging material, more than $5,000 cash and 255 grams of buffing agent.

Schenkey has been charged with possession of a loaded firearm with ammunition, possession of a firearm knowing it was unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a firearm, prohibited weapon, unsafe storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to an order and possession of unauthorized body armour.

As well, Schenkey has been charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of fentanyl and proceeds of crime.

“This arrest is a significant step in protecting our community from dangerous criminal activity,” said Ryan Thorburn, ALERT Medicine Hat. “Along with the suspect, we seized multiple firearms that posed a serious threat to public safety. By getting these firearms off the streets, we are taking a strong stand against violence and illegal drug operations. Our investigation remains ongoing, and we will continue to work with the community to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”

Schenkey has been remanded in custody following a Judicial Interim Release bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court today.
