Volunteer fair offers students ways to help

By Alexandra Noad - Lethbridge Herald Local Journalism Initiative Reporter on September 21, 2024.

Volunteering is something which can give you a warm fuzzy feeling, but it also can help you stand out when it comes to getting your dream job.
Lethbridge Polytechnic held a volunteer fair this week, partnering with Volunteer Lethbridge, to help students find places looking for volunteers around the city. There were a total of 27 booths form various organizations such as MADD Canada, Last Chance Cat Ranch and Streets Alive.
Lori Harasem, Health and Wellness coordinator at the Polytechnic, says Wellness Services was impressed with the turnout the fair had.
“We are really excited about the turnout; it has been very busy today. It’s a real win-win because the students will be able to, hopefully, find some time to help some organizations and the organizations get some of our students to help them do their great work,” said Harasem.
Many students have volunteer hours as a requirement for their degrees, but even if it’s not a requirement, it can help make someone stand out while on a hunt for a job in their desired field.
According to an article on Alberta Alis website, volunteering shows you are committed to your community as well as gives you experience for future jobs.
Harasem says volunteering also helps make connections with potential employers.
“The more you meet people, the more it helps you open the doors in the long term,” said Harasem.
Volunteering doesn’t just help with careers, it can also aide in suicide prevention. With cooler and darker months are approaching, Harasem encourages students to find connection, which can come in many forms.
“Connecting to others and staying connected to others is so important. Whether that’s only a few friends, whether it’s volunteering, or by joining a club or group sports,” said Harasem.
Harasem also encourages people to get outside, even for a 15-minute walk.
There are many resources on campus for students who may be struggle with stress or other mental health issues, which Harasem encourages students use before being in a crisis.
