A proposal to rezone the “Old Rodeo Grounds” in Brooks to become a potential school site has been paused while that city contemplates adding more amenities to a redevelopment, Mayor John Petrie announced Thursday.

The 24-acre parcel was put up for sale in 2020 but, with no takers, was eventually offered by the city this summer to the area’s Catholic school board for use to locate a new school.

That was scheduled to advance to a public hearing on the rezoning matter on Sept. 16 but will now be postponed, said Petrie.

“The additional planning time will allow us to collaborate effectively, ensuring that we maximize the potential of this space to benefit the entire community,” said Petrie. “By investigating the opportunity for both educational facilities and community amenities, we aim to create a multi-use area that serves the needs of our growing population.”

A release states adding recreation facilities, like soccer fields or other public facilities, doesn’t change “nor disrupt” plans submitted by Christ the Redeemer School Division to the Alberta Ministry of Education.

A new zoning hearing is expected in October for the land which is located on Seventh Street E., between Second Avenue E. and Railway Avenue.
