sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Medicine Hat College Rattlers cross country team was led by Madison Scrimger in their first meet of the season. The local third-year runner recorded her first ACAC cross country race win Saturday in Edmonton. The 19-year old nursing student had an early lead and never looked back, finishing with a time of 25:36 for the 6km rolling course in Gold Bar Park. She finished 24 seconds ahead of second place finisher Ashlee Walker of the host school Concordia University. Fellow Rattlers Ellie Barlow and Addison Wiley also raced. The rookie pair ACAC debuts with Barlow finishing in eighth, Wiley placed 30th. Three Rattler men’s runners traversed the 8km distance. Rookie Askia Tahirou led the way with a 17th place finish. Gage Smith was 22nd and Spencer Wilson crossed the line in 25th place. Next up for the Rattlers runners is the Lethbridge Polytechnic Open on Sept. 21. Soccer The MHC women’s soccer team kicked off the ACAC season with a win Sunday. The Rattlers beat the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings 2-1. Midfielder Keeley Zambon led the offence with a pair of goals, centreback Keandra Leslie scored the game winner. Abby Lalach made three saves in net. The Rattlers women’s soccer team (1-0) hosts the Red Deer Polytechnic on Saturday and the Olds College Broncos on Sunday. The women’s team plays at 2 and 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday respectively, with the men’s team playing at 4 and 2 p.m. Golf Rattlers golfer Michael Valk finished first at the ACAC Golf Regional hosted by NAIT. The 2023 golfer of the year finished six under par in his two rounds. On the women’s side, second-year golfer Taryn Sanderson ended the weekend in third place individually. 16
