After receiving a letter from the Navy League Cadets of Lethbridge, a former cadet has sounded the alarm on their need for volunteers to become board members.
Davey Wiggers, a former air cadet with a son who graduated from the Navy League Cadets of Lethbridge, is worried that without members to run the board, the cadets will no longer be able to continue their chapter in the city.
“Without a board that oversees the local chapter, that would go to a provincial overseer, if there was one available but there isn’t one. Then it would go to an out-of-province overseer and really what happens is that we would likely see the loss of the Navy League cadet program here in Lethbridge all together,” said Wigger.
He said in hopes to avoid this from happening, he is reaching out to members of the community to volunteer as board membersin some capacity. He has put his name forward to join.
“The letter says the president can no longer serve as he already served three terms and the treasurer is retiring. I put my name forward but a board cannot be run by one person alone,” said Wiggers.
Wiggers said he believes the cadets is an important organization for the youth in Lethbridge and he believes losing the program will have a devastating impact on those who wish to be part of it.
“I think it’s very important, actually more important now than never before in a society where social media often detaches kids from interpersonal relationships and other young children. Learning things in a structure, discipline and civic minded organization, I think it is far too important to let slide,” said Wiggers.
He said he is hoping former cadets from either Navy, Army or Air would step up and help out by volunteering to be on the board and avoid the loss of the Navy cadets program in Lethbridge.
“The AGM is in October and it’s important that the people step forward and volunteer for this organization,” said Wiggers.
