Investigation is continuing into a late night head-on collision on Highway 3 at the interchange of Highway 3A west of Coaldale that put six people in hospital, including three minors in serious condition.

When RCMP, fire and EMS staff arrived on scene after being dispatched at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, they found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames with front-end damage, and a second vehicle, a 2024 Nissan Sentra, with substantial front-end damage consistent with a head-on collision.

Police say the driver of the Sentra, a male resident of Lethbridge, was transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. His seven-year-old son was taken to Calgary with critical injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a female resident of Calgary, had non life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, while three children from the same family, aged nine, 13 and 16, were taken to Calgary hospital and are in life-threatening condition.
