Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services has posted on Facebook four safety tips for campers heading out to enjoy the Heritage Day long weekend, as the region remains under a heat warning.

Firefighters say to use designated fire pits and make sure to clear an area at least 25 feet away from tents, trees and flammable material. They also recommend keeping a bucket of water or shovel close by to extinguish an out-of-control fire.

All fires should be attended to at all times and should have an adult present to supervise the fire. “A campfire left alone for only a few minutes can grow into a damaging fire,” reads the post.

Firefighters would also like to remind residents all fire pits, except for propane fire tables and pits, require a permit.

More information on fire pit permits can be found online on the city’s website and searching ‘Fire Codes Permits and Inspections.’
