The Medicine Hat Mavericks reached the same win-mark as the 2023 team with a win Tuesday. The Mavs won 5-3 at Swift Current over the 57’s for their 30th win of the season, matching the same number as last summer. They came into the contest Tuesday off an off day Monday and in spooky fashion, the Mavs last contest was a 5-3 win Sunday over the same Swift Current squad. Medicine Hat pushed to score in the first inning, with right fielder Jordan Phillips sprinting for home from second base on a single from left fielder Micah Dvorak to left field. Phillips was thrown out at home to end the first. The Mavs did eventually get the first runs of the night on the board. They scratched across a pair of run sin the top of the third for a 2-0 lead. Centre fielder Brody Gardner drove a ball to right field for an RBI single and first baseman Nick Thibodeau drove in a run with a groundout that scored Phillips. The 57’s scored in the bottom of the frame. with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it a 2-1 game. Medicine hat supplemented their lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Shortstop Johnny Vulcano hit a solo home run for his fourth home run of the season. An RBI single from second baseman Marshall Burke put the Mavs ahead 4-1. Medicine Hat starter John Walsh worked into the seventh inning. The left-handed pitcher was lifted in the seventh after allowing an RBI single with nobody out. Cesar Rodriguez took over on the mound and held the 57’s to one more run in the frame, preserving a 4-3 lead. Walsh’s line finished at three runs (two earned) on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. The Mavs grabbed an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Thibodeau. Rodriguez worked a quick bottom of the ninth inning, inducing two strikeouts and recording a punch-out for the final out, preserving the win. The Mavs (30-20) are back at Swift Current on Wednesday to face the 57’s. 14
