Third Street construction on schedule and moving to next stage

A busy Third Street SE intersection was reopened Thursday after a summer of construction. The intersection of Third Street and Fifth Avenue reopened in the evening as the Third Street downtown utility and surface upgrades project remains on schedule and nears the next stage, the city says. Traffic on the 400 block of Third Street will return to one-way traffic. Three of five stages in Phase 1 of the Third Street project are complete, the city says, with the fourth stage – between S. Railway Street and Sixth Avenue SE – under construction. The fifth stage is slated to begin the week of July 29. The city will provide an update on the exact start date for this closure once available. Crews will close the intersection of Third Street SE and Sixth Avenue, as well as a portion of the 500 block of Third Street. The majority of the 500 block will remain open throughout and will transition to two-way traffic throughout this stage. The work zone will be fenced off and detours will be in effect. 7-6
