Speeding motorcyclist gets house arrest

One of two motorcyclists who sped past an off-duty police officer a year ago, has been fined and placed under house arrest.
Gregory Paul Vredegoor, who was initially charged with dangerous driving, pleaded guilty in Lethbridge court of justice to the lesser but included offence of careless driving, for which he was fined $1,000.
He also pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing a peace officer, and was handed a three-month conditional sentence with probation. For the first two months of his conditional sentence he must remain under house arrest, which will be followed by one month of curfew every day between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
At about 11:30 a.m. on May 12, 2023 an off-duty officer was driving south on Scenic Drive North when two motorcycles blew past him. The first biker did a couple of wheelies before speeding off at an estimated 170 km-h. The second biker also sped away, weaving in and out of traffic, before his motorcycle blew its engine.
Both bikers pulled into Park Place Mall parking lot, while the officer went to the police station nearby to report the incident to officers working at the time.
Two officers pulled up to the bikers, and when one of the bikers made a move as if to leave, an officer grabbed him. The other biker, Vredegoor, was also detained, but refused to cooperate.
“The two officers) approached Vredegoor and asked his name, to which he replied, ‘f–k you, I’m not giving that to you,’ ” Crown Prosecutor Caylene Foley told court.
Vredegoor was arrested after he swore at the officer a second time and said he had not done anything wrong, even though the officer told him he was seen committing an offence under the Traffic Safety Act.
During his period of probation, Vredegoor must remain in Alberta and live at a specific address on Foxbend Crescent North, and not change his residence without approval from the court or his probation supervisor. He was also warned that police can check on him at any time to determine his compliance with the probation order, house arrest and curfew.
