AHS shares ATV safety advice for long weekend

@MedicineHatNews Before many residents head into the more remote areas of the province for the long weekend, AHS would like to shape a few suggestions to ensure that ATV users return uninjured and happy. Between 2015 and 2022, Alberta reported nearly 9,500 ATV-related emergency department and urgent care centre visits, said AHS, and as such, want to stress the importance of making All-Terrain Vehicle Safety a priority. They ask for all people who can legally operate an ATV to be sure to wear a properly fitting helmet, as well as a jacket, long pants, goggles, boots and gloves. Drivers should also consider refreshing their handle on the controls with an ATV operator course, and make sure their vehicle is in good working condition before riding it. Three-wheeled ATVs should be avoided, as should the use of alcohol or drugs, and taking passengers on single-rider models. AHS reminds residents to remain on trails and to be aware of hazards, weather and trail conditions. They encourage riders to bring a cellphone or two-way radio with them on all drives, as well as a first-aid kit, and to let people know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. With this advice, AHS hopes campers and other ATV operators can have a fun and safe long weekend. 8-7
