RCMP Briefs: Woman and three kids sought in Ontario child abduction case may have stopped near Cypress Hills

@MedicineHatNews RCMP believe a woman travelling with three children who are the subject of an Ontario RCMP child abduction case may have stayed near the Cypress Hills in Saskatchewan last week. A white 2018 Mercedes belonging to Astrid Schiller, 55, was found abandoned at Pine Cree Regional Park, between Eastend and Shaunavon on Friday, June 21. Police say they do not believe the children, three boys aged 9, 11, and 12, are in immediate danger. RCMP reported Monday that Schiller, wanted by the Durham (Ont.) regional police attended a business in Assiniboia on June 17, and was last at Pine Cree Regional Park on June 19. The group may be travelling in another vehicle and staying at campgrounds. Anyone with information should contact the RCMP. Fatal crash near Stewart Valley A Swift Current man was killed in a highway crash near Elrose on June 21, RCMP in that province report. Officers with the Rosetown detachment say the 52-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision between the man’s SUV and a semi-truck on Highway 4, about 15 kilometres south of Elrose, or 100 kilometres north of Swift Current. The name of the deceased was not released. Oilfield theft in Brooks Thieves made off with copper wire, office equipment and a single-axle trailer from the Cardinal Energy yard in Brooks, the detachment in that city reports. Mounties responded to the break-in on the morning of June 21. The investigation is ongoing. Alberta workplace fatality A road construction and maintenance company will pay nearly $500,000 in fines after a worker was hit by a supervisor’s vehicle while clearing a storm drain in Airdrie five years ago. Volker Stevin and the supervisor, Michael O’Neill, were convicted in province Court of Justice in Calgary under the Occupational Health and Safety Act after trial in April and were sentenced June 20, according to a release from the province. The company was fined a total of $480,000 and the supervisor $66,000 for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker and under the OHS Code for exposing a worker to danger from moving equipment. The accident occurred Oct. 2, 2019, and the trial began in 2023. 20-19
