American Legion roundup: Knights pickup two wins in own tourney

The Medicine Hat Knights of Columbus tallied a pair of wins this weekend at their tournament.

The Knights hosted a five-team tournament this weekend at Jeffries Park and McCoy Field, with 12 games taking part.

The Knights opened the weekend with an 8-0 win Friday over the U18 Calgary Premier Blues.

Cole Carlson had two RBIs and two runs scored with two hits, and Ward Davies and Ethan Chenard each had two runs scored with a hit and an RBI.

Nixon Kunkel worked a complete game on the mound, recording seven strikeouts in seven innings.

The Knight lost the second game Friday, falling 11-0 to the Glacier Twins.

Carlson had their lone hit. Aayden Anderson started the game and worked 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and Davies pitched 2.1 innings with a punch-out. Owen Fisher worked the final out of the game.

The Knights lost the first game Saturday, falling 8-3 to the U17 Lethbridge Lakers.

Ethan Grad had two hits with an RBI and a run scored and Kane Bishop had two hits with a run scored.

Jayden Mook started the game and recorded five Ks in five innings of work. Carlson pitched the last inning of the game.

They bounced back with an 8-1 win over the U18 Moose Jaw Canucks.

Chenard tallied three hits with two RBIs and a run scored and Liam Cunningham had two hits with a run scored and an RBI.

James Cole pitched six innings with four strikeouts and Carlson recorded a punch-out in his lone inning.

The Knights finished the weekend with a 12-8 loss in a rematch with the Calgary Blues.

Both Kunkel and Cunningham had a hit with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

Cunningham started the game and had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Kane Bishop worked in the second inning before Grad took over and worked 2.2 innings with a strikeout. Chenard pitched two innings and Ty Meyer worked a clean inning with a strikeout.

Monarchs

The Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs had three games against the U18 Lethbridge Elks this weekend.

They opened the weekend with an 11-3 loss Saturday.

Aidan Eckersall had three hits with two RBIs and Landon MacPherson had a hit with an RBI.

Jeff Bullock started the game, recording seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. Kayne Olinski worked the last out of the fifth inning and Parker Hunt pitched the sixth. Riley Tweten worked in the game and Pryce Velichko finished the game with a strikeout in an inning of work.

The Monarchs lost the opening game Sunday, falling 18-10 to the Elks.

Eckersall had three hits with two RBIs and Olinski added two RBIs on three hits. Ryler Straarup had three hits with two runs scored and an RBI, and both Hunt and Trevin Ressler had two hits with two runs scored.

Cade Harrison started the game and Cade Moch took over to pitch three innings with four Ks. Hunt worked two frames and Asha Frey pitched the final inning.

The Monarchs finished the weekend in winning fashion, beating the Elks 20-12.

Olinski led the offence with four hits, four RBIs and three runs scored. Velichko had four RBIs on three hits and two runs scored and Bullock scored four times on two hits with an RBI.

Ressler started the game and recorded four strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Harrison recorded the win with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
