By James Tubb on June 13, 2024.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks were the comeback kids Thursday in Saskatoon.

The Mavericks scored four unanswered runs to come back and beat the Saskatoon Berries 6-4, snapping a two-game losing streak. Medicine Hat lost 14-8 at Saskatoon on Wednesday.

The two teams traded runs in the second and third innings to open the scoring.

After the Berries got on the board in the second, Medicine Hat notched a tally with Johnny Vulcano scoring on an error by the Saskatoon second baseman.

The Berries grabbed a lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the fifth. Medicine Hat also tallied a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Brady Bean, making it a 4-2 game after five innings.

Jacob Petersheim started the game for the Mavericks and worked into the fifth inning with three strikeouts,  allowing four runs on three hits and five walks. Jack Novak took over on the bump and recorded the win with 3.2 shutout innings, allowing only four hits with five strikeouts.

The Mavs tied the game up in the seventh inning.

An RBI single from Jordan Phillips followed up with an RBI double from Nick Thibodeau made it a 4-4 game heading into eighth. Novak held the Berries at bay, stranding four runners in the seventh and eighth inning combined.

Medicine Hat grabbed the final lead in the ninth.

After Bean hit a leadoff single, Phillips knocked a ball off the outfield wall that scored Bean from first for the Mavs first lead of the game. Six pitchers later, Thibodeau drove in Phillips with a single for the 6-4 final score.

Josh Landry took over on the mound for the Mavs in the bottom of the ninth looking for the save. The lefty recorded two quick outs before allowing a single. He induced a fly out to centre field for the final out.

The Mavs (9-5) are back in the action Friday when they head to Regina to face the East division leading Red Sox. They return to Athletic Park on Saturday and Sunday for a two-game set against the Moose Jaw Miller Express.
