news@medicinehatnews.com Throughout the week until June 16 a local coalition group is highlighting the importance of human connection with a campaign promoting ‘random acts of connection.’ What Matter to Hatters Coalition partnered with The Station and MT Nest Cafe to help raise awareness about loneliness by handing out coffee sleeves throughout the week decorated by public school students from the HUG and MyPlace mental health capacity building program. The coalition says it’s important to raise awareness around the impacts loneliness and isolation have on health by creating a supportive community and having open conversations. Throughout the week the coalition is encouraging residents to share messages encouraging connection and when to seek support through social media by posting with the hashtags #RandomActsOfConnection and #LonelinessAwarenessWeek. The coalition is also promoting upcoming ‘speed friending’ events that will be held at the Public Library in June and August with more details expected soon. Loneliness Awareness Week began in 2017 in the U.K. and has grown into a global movement to raise awareness and empower people to find new connections by hosting activities, book clubs, walking clubs, art workshops, bake sales and wellness festivals. 8
