Canada wheelchair rugby squad rolled in close games at Canada Cup

By The Canadian Press on June 8, 2024.

Canada’s wheelchair rugby team is getting tired of being on the wrong end of exciting, down-to-the-wire games at the Canada Cup.

Canada lost 44-42 to defending champion Canada Cup Japan on Saturday morning, then lost 52-51 to reigning Paralympic champions Great Britain in the evening match at Richmond Olympic Oval.

Fifth-ranked Canada, preparing for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, opened the six-team international tournament on Thursday morning with a 58-54 win over reigning world champion Australia. Later that evening the hosts lost 53-51 to the top ranked United States Eagles.

On Friday, Canada dropped a 53-46 decision to two-time European champion France, then dropped two more close games on Saturday.

The medal games, including the gold final, will be played Sunday.

THROW-INS: France squeaked past Great Britain 46-45 on Saturday, then Great Britain bounced back in the later game to clip the U.S. 57-55.
