Calgary’s mayor is urging residents to continue cutting their water use by at least 25 per cent, as fixing a major water main break is still days away.

Jyoti Gondek says the city is in the midst of a “significant water supply challenge” that is also affecting surrounding communities, including Airdrie.

Residents have been under a mandatory ban on outdoor water use.

They are also being urged to reduce their water indoors through shorter showers, fewer toilet flushes and reduced loads of laundry and dishes.

Officials say the city’s water won’t run out in a day, but levels are dropping and it will eventually run out.

The city was put under a water emergency after a major feeder main in the northwest fractured Wednesday night, flooding streets.
