In Court: Local man gets nine months total for break-in, burglary of South Flats business

@MedicineHatNews A Medicine Hat man will spend a total of nine months in jail for smashing the front door of a South Flats business and making off with $6,000 worth of computer equipment with an accomplice last fall. Anthony Irvine Brown, 37, pleaded guilty Thursday in Provincial Court of Justice at Medicine Hat to the offences last fall. In custody since then, he will spend another two months in jail to satisfy the sentence. “It’s a significant theft from a local business,” said Crown prosecutor Brian Shantz, while presenting a sentence recommendation. Brown was represented by duty council. Court heard that Brown and another individual were seen on security camera footage outside the store before breaking the door and leaving with a number of HP laptops and Apple equipment. Police located the men in an alley near Kingsway Avenue and found the merchandise in a dumpster and a “glass-breaking instrument” on Brown’s person. Library trespass A man who tore up a book when he was told the leave the Medicine Hat Public Library and made a pistol gesture with his hand will spend 60 days in jail. Matthew Yen was taken into custody near the downtown branch in late May after police were called by facility staff, and charged with mischief, uttering threats and failing to comply with a probation order. He pled guilty Thursday via closed-circuit TV from the Medicine Hat Remand Centre – where he has spent 11 days – after declining to speak with duty council. Yen is also subject to a common-law peace bond to remain of good behaviour and not attend the library for a period of two years. Brooks sex case A two-year-old accusation of sexual assault against a Brooks man might be resolved in July, court heard. Chad Neil Jensen was charged by Brooks RCMP in April 2022 with sexual assault, unlawful confinement, publishing intimate images without consent and assault. On Thursday at Medicine Hat, new defence attorney Greg White told the court his client would re-elect to have the matters dealt with at Court of Justice and that a resolution agreement with Crown prosecutors is near finalization.
