The board studying potential updates to the International St. Mary and Milk Rivers agreement will have an additional year to complete its work.

The International Joint Commission commissioned the work in 2021, and will now have until June 2026 to deliver its findings, according to a release.

The effort aims to examine changes and improvements to the agreement from 1921 to apportion water in the two rivers that flow in both Montana and southern Alberta.

News of the extension comes as the board plans to hold a public town hall meeting on June 5 in Lethbridge to discuss progress to date and the work plan for 2024.
