A 56-year-old man who ripped off a government assistance program for thousands of dollars has been fined and ordered to repay the money.
Douglas Wayne Miller had for many years been receiving financial assistance through Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, but between Jan. 1, 2020 and Nov. 30, 2021, Miller received additional income from work and from the federal government, which he didn’t report.
“The amount of overpayment was for $16,000, and if that money had been declared, that amount from his AISH payment would have been deducted,” Crown Prosecutor Robert Morrison told court.
Miller pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lethbridge court of justice to one count under the AISH Act of knowingly omitting to provide the government with information about his extra income.
He was fined $500 – half the maximum allowed under the Act – and ordered to pay back the $16,000 to which he wasn’t entitled.
