ABE BERG

ABE BERG June 13, 1943 – May 16, 2024
Abram “Abe” Zacharias Berg, of Medicine Hat, Alberta, beloved husband of Joy Berg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the age of 80 years.
Abe was born in Hague, Saskatchewan in 1943 to Peter and Aganetha Berg and was raised on the family farm for the first several years of his life. We tried to think of a song for Abe and this song fits him so well, “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash, as he lived in: Taber, Saskatoon, Bonnyville, back to Saskatoon, Edmonton, Meadow Lake, North Battleford, Battleford, Red Deer, Brooks, Dutches and finally found his way to Medicine Hat for 24 years.
During his time in Meadow Lake, Abe had an extreme love for hockey as he started the junior hockey club and filled the role as President and Manager for the Meadow Lake Lakers.
Abe loved to volunteer in the church, the condo unit and the Veiner Centre and was always ready to debate politics with anyone who wanted the challenge.
Most of all Abe loved children. He always had to hold a baby, loved to play with the kids and make them smile. He also loved to tease (pester) and no one got away from it. Abe had a way of putting words together and created his own language that made no sense but it was funny.
Abe is survived by his wife, Joy; four children, Greg (Pam) Berg, Karen (Randy) Pattemore, Jocelyn (Brad) Sorensen, and Alison (Craig) Pearson; six grandchildren, Brittnee (Ryan) Tait, Mitchell (Desirae) Berg, Dakota (Stefan) Sorensen, Ashley (Mitchell) Sorensen, Drayder and Hudsyn Pearson; three great grandchildren, Grace Tait, Lucy Tait, and Lucas Berg; two brothers, Peter and Henry (Gail); one sister, Dolly as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Abe was predeceased by his father, Peter; his mother, Aganetha; two brothers, Neil and John; one sister, Maria, and one granddaughter, Rachael.
The funeral service will be held at VICTORY LUTHERAN CHURCH (2793 Southview Drive SE) on Wednesday, May 22 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Roland Weisbrot officiating. The service will be live streamed. Those who wish to attend virtually, please visit victorylutheran.ca/livestream. A private interment service will be held at a later date.
Those who wish to remember Abe with a donation, may do so to the Canada Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5) in Abe’s name. To leave a message of condolence you may visit http://www.pattisonfuneralhome.com.
