The Monsignor McCoy Colts tipped their caps to their eldest players on Wednesday.
The Colts honoured their three graduating players with a seniors night during a doubleheader.
After an 11-1 win over the Raymond Comets, the Colts held a ceremony for three graduating players, Fischer Hays, Mace Carriere and Makhi Carrire. Head coach Cole Schreiber described the night as a special opportunity to recognize three large parts of their team.
“They come to the park every day with an attitude to win, an attitude to get better and an attitude to help all of our young guys mature a little bit, too,” Schreiber said. “So to honour those three tonight, it’s pretty special.
“I’ve had the opportunity to coach Mace Carrire the last couple years, to have him in our group this year makes a big difference for us. He brings a great attitude, passion for the game, and to have Makhi who’s on our championship team last year, he played a big role last year and is playing a big role this year.
“And Fischer, what can you say about him? Ultimate leader, he does everything for us, he’s a pitcher, he can play centre, he can play short, he can catch and hits early in our lineup. Just a great leader, comes to compete every day. So to honour those guys is pretty special.”
The Colts dropped the second game of their doubleheader, falling 13-3 to the LCI Rams in six innings.
JJ Harnett had two RBIs with a hit and a run scored in the loss to LCI. The Colts sent four pitchers to the mound, with Haysom, Jarnett, Cole Carlson and Asha Frey splitting duties and recording a combined six strikeouts.
Against Raymond, Tate Bowal led the offence with three RBIs on two hits with two runs scored. Haysom crossed the plate twice and Hackett drove in a run with two hits and a run scored.
Hackett pitched all four innings, with one punch-out.
The Colts are off until Tuesday when they host the Kate Andrews Pride at Jeffries Field at 4 p.m. They’re 3-2 to start their Alberta Premier Baseball League season with room to grow, Schreiber says.
“I see a group of guys that are hungry, want to win, want to get better and want to learn and I think we have gotten better,” Schreiber said. “We’ve had a lot of learning take place so far this year. We returned a lot of our guys from last year to set the tone a little bit and everybody else is kind of learning as we go.
“So the year’s been positive, we’re making progress on the mound, in the field and with the bats, and the high school season is short but we still have a couple of weeks to keep getting a little bit better every day.
“That’s the goal right now and I know our group is gonna bounce back from something like this. They’re hungry, they want to win and they’re competitors, so we’ll be OK.”
