Several Mother’s Day events are planned around this weekend to celebrate the annual holiday honouring our beloved givers of life, including a dance and live musical performances – but if you are planning to offer a bouquet of flowers, hopefully you’ve already bought them.
The News checked in with a handful of local florists who report the annual sharp increase in customers has left them sold out of their flower stock.
“We’re doing great, love all our mothers,” said Brenda Ruckaber, owner of Fresh Flower and Gifts.
However, you still have an opportunity to put on your dancing shoes and take mom out to enjoy the musical performance of Mixed Company as the German Canadian Harmony Club is hosting a Mother’s Day Dinner and Dance.
“It will be a good evening to bring your family out for an enjoyable evening for Mother’s Day,” says Sharon Frank, president German Canadian Harmony Club.
Tickets for the dinner are no longer available however the red roses will still be set for the dance following the dinner and tickets will be sold for $20 a person at the door and will run from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday at the German-Canadian Harmony Hall in Redcliff.
If mom enjoys any iconic hits from Simon and Garfunkel and John Lennon and Paul McCartney, then she may be interested in checking out musicians Mick Dalla-Vee and Michael Sicoly who will be performing two tribute shows Sunday.
“Because your mom is the right age for all this music from the 60s and 70s,” says Frank Devine, president of the Monarch 1911 Society.
A tribute to Simon and Garfunkel starts at 2 p.m. and will be followed by an evening performance honouring the music of Lennon and McCartney at 7 p.m.
“If you really loved your mother you could take her to Simon and Garfunkel at two o’clock,” says Devine. “Then you could take her out for a nice supper and a glass of wine and then you could bring her back to Lennon and McCartney.”
Proceeds from both performances will go toward ongoing repairs and restoration of the Monarch Theatre with a goal to restore the 560-seat theatre to its original distinction and acclaim of 1941.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $75, or in advance by calling 403-526-2603. Each ticket includes a $40 charitable receipt.
The Medicine Hat Lodge is hosting a Mother’s Day Ballroom Brunch that includes one mimosa per adult and free face painting for kids. The brunch is running two seatings, 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Reservations can be made by calling 403-502-8176
As well, the local Denny’s restaurant is donating $2 from every Berry Stuffed French Toast Slam sold until Sunday directly to the Alberta Women’s Health Foundation.
