The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation is launching this year’s Wildlife Baby Shower fundraiser on Sunday to coincide with the arrival of its first kit of the season.

The animal in question, an orphaned red fox kit, found alone in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, marks the first of what AIWC says will be a large influx of animals that come with the spring and summer months.

From the end of April to mid-June, the AIWC typically sees a 600 per cent increase in wildlife patients admissions, most recently orphaned.

“We need your help to make sure these babies are able to get back to the wild where they belong,” AIWC said in a release. To achieve this, the fundraiser will be underway with a goal of $25,000 by May 31.

“Our clinic staff and volunteers are expecting to care for a variety of animal species during this busy season, from black bear cubs to mallard ducklings,” said AIWC. “Most young animals are orphaned due to human causes, including vehicle collisions, domestic cat or dog attacks, window strikes.”

Another cause of these orphanings can also be with good intent, as humans see an animal on its own and bring it in, unaware ts parents may still be well and merely away for a time.

Wildlife baby patients can take months to rehabilitate, requiring food, medication, specialized housing and cost, anywhere from $100 to more than $1,000 to rear until release, and AIWC runs solely on grants and donations.

Due to this, the organization is seeking support to help operate throughout the busiest season. Those interested in supporting AIWC’s endeavours can find more information, or donate, at aiwc.ca/wildlife-baby-shower.
