The City of Havre, Mont. has issued a boil water advisory while it flushes the water system and boosts chlorination.

That process could take 20 days to complete, and according to public works officials, is being done out of “an abundance of caution” after two city residents and one Hill County resident fell ill.

Montana Public Health and the City of Havre Health Board reported that three people have been diagnosed with Giardia, an intestinal parasite that causes cramping and diarrhea.

Any water that is ingested, used for tooth brushing, cooking or dish washing should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute and cooled to kill any bacteria present.
