Monarchs open season with weekend tournament

The Medicine Hat Monarchs kicked off their American Legion season at home.

The Monarchs had four games, picking up a tie and recording three losses.

They opened the weekend with a 5-3 loss Saturday to the Calgary Premier Blues.

Kayne Olinski had two hits and both Pryce Velichko and JJ Harnett recorded an RBI. Harnett also started the game on the mound, working three innings. Riley Tweten pitched two innings.

The Monarchs finished Saturday’s play with a 5-5 tie with the Badlands Badgers.

Parker Hunt, Jeff Bullock, Cade Harrison, Harnett and Parker Krause each recorded a hit and an RBI. Ryler Straarup started the game and had three strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. Cade Moch worked two innings with three strikeouts.

The Monarchs faced the Saskatoon Cubs on Sunday morning, falling 7-3. Aidan Eckersall had a hit and scored twice, Bulloch and Harrison recorded RBIs. Bullock started the game and recorded four strikeouts in three innings pitched. Olinski worked 1.2 innings with a strikeout before Tweten took over to finish the inning.

They finished the weekend with an 11-10 loss to the Calgary Blues.

Olinski had two hits and scored twice, Parker Hunt and Bullock recorded a hit, RBI and two runs scored and both Cole Carlson and Moch had two hits with an RBI and a run scored.

Harrison started the game and pitched 1.1 innings before Carlson took over and recorded an out. Asha Frey pitched an inning with a strikeout.

The Monarchs are hosting another tournament this weekend at Jeffries field, with five games on their schedule.

They face Lethbridge Academy on Saturday at 10 a.m. and are against the Regina Whitesox at 2:30 p.m. They also play the St. Albert Cardinals immediately after and finish the day against the Regina Wolfpack at 5:30 p.m. They’ll play Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
