St. Mary’s School and Notre Dame Academy hosts mega badminton tourney

St. Mary’s School and Notre Dame Academy had badminton action on full display this weekend.

The 11th Annual Colts-Dawgs MEGA Badminton Tournament was held Friday and Saturday with roughly 820 junior high-aged badminton players representing 40 schools playing at Notre Dame Academy and South Ridge YMCA.

Organizers self-proclaimed the MEGA tournament to be the largest junior high badminton tournament in Western Canada. In all age categories, more than 1,050 games were played.

The 13 and Under age category was the largest with 347 competitors and nearly 500 games in a six-hour period on Friday night. Lethbridge won the aggregate title.

Here are the local results:

Boys Singles: L.J. Holland, Crescent Heights, bronze.

Girls singles: Sophie Baht, l’École Les Cyprès, silver

Girls Doubles: Iliana Meindersma and Kassidy Austin, St. Mary’s, bronze.

Mixed: Grade Perrault and Lia Hoffart, Irvine, gold; Aldrienne Aya and Christopher Pope, St. Mary’s, bronze.

The 14 and Under age category had 252 competitors playing almost 350 games. St. Mary’s Medicine Hat took the aggregate title.

Girls Singles: Sasha Todd, St. Mary’s, gold.

Boys Doubles: Hudson Gross and Gage Bowal, Notre Dame, silver; and Mason Pollard and Ethan Chenard, Notre Dame, bronze.

Girls Doubles: Gabriana Cardona and Kylie Allan, Dr Roy Wilson, gold.

Mixed Doubles: Van Leopold and Sydney Broesky, Notre Dame, silver; Addy Taylor and Mason Opp, St. Mary’s, bronze.

In the 16 and Under age category, there were 221 participants and they played almost 325 games. Brooks Junior High School took the aggregate title.

Boys Singles: Ethan Grad, Notre Dame, bronze.

Girls Singles: Tianna Laychuk, St. Mary’s, silver; Jazlyn Green, Parkside bronze.

Boys Doubles: Phoenix Fen and David Mann, St. Mary’s, silver.

Girls Doubles: Lily Clarke and Jorja Besplug, St. Mary’s, bronze.

The overall aggregate championship was won by St. Mary’s, with Notre Dame Academy taking second, and Brooks Junior High taking third.
