For those most at risk when it comes to developing breast cancer, mobile mammography services will be available in Bow Island from April 22-24.

The service is for women aged 45-74, and offered via Alberta Health Services in the form of screen testing.

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and has proven to be the most effective way to detect breast cancer, said AHS in a press release. Testing is done with the aim of providing early detection, which allows for a greater number of options for treatment and a better chance of survival for those affected.

During appointments, four X-rays will be taken, which will be then looked at by a radiologist. Results will be sent to those who participate in the program via mail. The entire appointment is expected to take roughly 45 minutes, with much of the time being filling out a questionnaire about family history and access to breast health resources.

Appointments are required in order to receive screening, which can be made by calling 1-800-667-0604. The unit will be at the Bow Island Provincial Building Health Unit for the duration of their visit.

Further information in regards to the program can be found online at screeningforlife.ca/breast/screen-test-mobile-clinics/.
