Man stabbed after allegedly propositioning woman

LETHBRIDGE HERALDdshurtz@lethbridgeherald.com A man who may have propositioned a woman downtown late last year, got more than he bargained for.Police received a report about 7 p.m. on Dec. 11 that two people with knives were chasing a man on 6 Street near 3 Avenue South. Police found the man suffering from a minor stab wound, and he told police he had been walking through the park when he became involved in a verbal exchange with several individuals.
“He didn’t know who they were, but he said they began chasing him and one of them, a woman…stabbed him one time in the back,” Crown prosecutor Bob Morrison said Thursday in Lethbridge court of justice, where Jeremy Elisha Many Shots, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a weapon.
The victim showed police the stab wound in his lower back, and while it appeared superficial, he was treated at the hospital.
A witness told police she saw Many Shots stab a “small white man,” and led police to the site of the incident.
“There were a few blood drops on the sidewalk, and about 20 feet away there was a knife that was thrown onto the sidewalk into some snow,” Morrison said.
Police found Many Shots nearby, and she was wearing a hoodie that had been described by witnesses and on which there were some blood stains.
“It appeared to police that Ms. Many Shots was under the influence of something but they didn’t suggest that she was necessarily intoxicated, in their view. She seemed to have been under the influence of alcohol and she did self-report that she had consumed some methamphetamine, as well.”
She may also have been provoked just before the attack.
“There’s a suspicion on the police’s part that the verbal back and forth between (the victim) and Ms. Many Shots and the other people that were in her group, involved some sort of solicitation that, perhaps, Ms. Many Shots took exception to.”
Lethbridge lawyer Tracy Hembroff said another witness to the chase saw someone in a green hoodie who appeared to punch the victim. Hembroff suggested evidence against her client is circumstantial, but Many Shots chose to plead guilty rather than face trial and all that involves.
Many Shots, who the Crown noted has 18 previous convictions for violence, was sentenced to slightly less than five months in jail, for which she was given full credit and which completes her sentence.
She must also submit a sample of her DNA for the National DNA Data Bank, and she is prohibited from possessing weapons for 10 years. 3
