@MedicineHatNews The province is touting its support for extending rural broadband networks, which includes hamlets in the County of Newell and others near Siksika Nation among others outlined on Tuesday. A federal-provincial partnership will provide $112 million this year as part of the Alberta broadband strategy and the federal Universal Broadband Fund. Edmonton has committed $390 million over five years, with Ottawa matching the funding. On March 5, the province said the latest program will extend coverage to 22,000 homes in remote, rural or Indigenous communities. “I’m confident that we are on track to achieving our goal of connecting every single Alberta household to high-speed internet by 2027,” said Nate Glubish, Alberta minister of technology and innovation. Among the 14 different internet providers part of this week’s announcement include EIDNet (a subsidiary of the Eastern Irrigation District, and Siksika Tel, owned by the Siksika Nation. EIDNet locations include Cassils, Rainier, Patricia, Millicent, Scandia, Gem, Rolling Hills, and Tilley.Siksika Tel communities are Cluny, Gleichen, Namaka, Shouldice, Siksika, Siksika No. 146 (Siksika Nation). Others are centred on Red Deer County, Irricana, Slave Lake and northern settlements. 7
