Switching leagues mid-season could cost the Brooks Bandits $10,000 if ice at the Centennial Regional Arena is needed for a championship series in the British Columbia Junior A hockey league.

The former AJHL team, and defending Alberta Junior A champions, left the Alberta circuit in a high profile dispute with four other teams earlier this year.

On Tuesday, they were scheduled on the Brooks city council agenda to ask that ice be scheduled to accommodate a potential BCHL championship series in late May. Those dates are after the AJHL had planned to crown a champion, and as part of the city’s schedule, Brooks parks and rec managers planned to remove the ice in early May prior to an indoor rodeo.

Cost estimates to reinstall ice after the rodeo include staff time, supplies and power required, and add up to $13,600, of which the Bandits would be required to pay $10,300.

A decision was not known at press time.
