Schouten wins world speedskating title in women’s 3k, Canada’s Weidemann second

CALGARY – Irene Schouten of the Netherlands has won the women’s 3,000 metres and Canada’s Isabelle Weidemann earned silver at the world single distance speedskating championship.

Weidemann laid down a time of three minutes 58.01 seconds in the fourth pairing for the rest of the field to chase in Calgary’s Olympic Oval.

Reigning Olympic champion Schouten bettered Weidemann’s mark in the final pairing with a time of 3:57.10.

Weidemann claimed her first world championship medal in an individual distance.

She was the Olympic bronze medallist in the women’s 3k in 2022.

Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic, who won the 3k in the 2023 world championship, finished third in 3:58.33.
