Brooks author Ben Galeski has published his second book, The Good Heart, which features a focus on a south Alberta man and the realities of war.

Galeski works as a teacher, and always wanted to challenge himself to write a full novel. Since then, he’s published two books as of this recent release, with a third he says will finish soon.

“The Good Heart really focuses on southern Alberta,” said Galeski. “The main character is a son of a ranching family who enlisted in the First World War.”

The story follows him in the First World War, focusing on the last 100 days of the war, said Galeski, juxtaposed with flashbacks of growing up in southern Alberta. Galeski said he tried to put the true real brutality of war, to highlight how a man is able to hold on to his humanity in the midst of such horror.

Galeski added that while the book is accessible to everyone, he does write from a Catholic worldview, and believes those from similar backgrounds will see that shine through in his work.

“You write what you know,” said Galeski. “I’ve learned a lot about those pieces of history and I do teach in a Catholic school and have been a member of the Catholic church my whole life. Then all you need is a good story where you can put it all together.”

The Good Heart is available in various stores in Brooks, as well as at bengaleskiauthor.ca/
